Gullwing Benz?

Who would have guessed that a half million dollar Merc would have trouble selling. I mean do you see many Saleen S7's or McLaren's on the street. In a defensive move to to not have to discontinue the SLR, Mercedes is planning on bringing back the original gullwing in 2011. The powerplant, nothing short of wicked. An AMG 6.2 liter making 750 hp. A possible 1000hp version could follow. Yes indeed, the ultimate Bond car.

Porche's Risky Business: 928 Returns

Dubbed the two door Panamera GT (the Panamera is Porche's answer to the four door sports car craze), the longer bonnett is reminiscent of the 928 that Tom Cruise drove off the pier in one of our favorite flicks of all time. In case your wondering how the power plant will compare to the Boxter or 997, the V-8 should pump out 520 hp (uh, that's GT3 status). Of course you could go green and opt for what should be a 400 hp V-6 hybrid.

Open Letter to Subaru: Death of a Tuner Car?

To the head of PR at Subaru:
First, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Dominick Infante, first I gotta ask, are you a hardcore automotive enthusiast? If so, you'd find yourself disagreeing with yourself. There isn't a fine line between satisfying the hardcore car guy who doesn't by into "Marketing" (coming from a guy that represented Ford Motor Company once on the agency side) and building a car for middle America. You can't do both (unless your M Power, AMG, and S-Audi)...hint, Japanese makers don't do it very well, at least not stateside anyway. Honda killed off the Accord from the Import scene with it's new found mid luxury appeal; the recent generation has been completely absent for nearly a decade (again spoken from someone who had 2 modified Accords). VW killed off the Jetta with yet again it's mid-luxury appeal (and yes, that was my first ever modified car); again the recent generation is completely absent except for the recent induction into the Speed Touring Challenge competition.

And yes, Subaru may have just done the same (or need we not speculate since the blogsphere of Subie enthusiasts who drive the current iteration just told you so). Subie owners are as passionate as APPLE/Mac computer owners. Wow, imagine if Mac took the Windows approach to make more money. Subaru may have also solidified those three letters, I speaking E-V-O language now, as the most desired mid-level priced sedan to import tune. Did I mention that Honda, VW, likely Subie have fallen from the ranks (that's why I snatched up a 4 door Integra to modify). You have to realize no one wants to just modify average looking cars (that thing looks like something KIA could design) otherwise we'd be driving KIA's with Garrett and Edlebrock turbos! The new look as we say isn't "ownable or unique" like the current version for import tuning.

The last nail in the coffin will be the aftermarket. Read again, limited mods for the Jetta, new Accord, Camry, Altima, Fusion, hence why we don't by them and trailer queen them to shows, we don't drift in them, track race them, drag race, or even consider them street racing worthy. The reason your Legacy doesn't sell like hot cakes, is (as I clear my throat), limited mods; I've seen 1 or 2 body kits???? Has Subaru paid attention to current tuner trends; everyone wants widebody fenders - your response - get rid of them; everyone wants a fender well to run 19 inch 255 series tires - your response - eliminate them; everyone wants a car with an aggressive stance - your response - getting the picture?

It's like the record labels pissing off urban/popular culture to satisfy middle America when Pop culture is the influencer, not the influenced.

But I understand, it was a "business" decision. But you may lose your identity as being "authentic." Lastly, all the thing mentioned in the article like more shoulder room, more cargo space, as I laugh out loud, we don't car about that stuff - Read, we gut the interiors for show and race! Oh, and did you opt out of the automotive industry's HORSEPOWER WAR going on? BMW's forthcoming 1 series will have 300 ponies! Time to invest in some trend watching.
Best of luck maintaining the interest of the passionate enthusiasts and we'll see if those sales numbers rack up.

Confirmed: BMW M1

After much discussion as to whether the folks at Bavarian would bring an entry level Bimmer to the states, the 1 series will makes it's debut in 2008. But the 1 series is less about an entry level product and more about a return to it's roots, via the inspiration of the 2002.

Combining sporty rear-wheel-drive dynamics, agile handling, powerful engines and seating for four, the 1 Series Coupe will reinvent the niche that the legendary BMW 2002 created. On sale in the spring of 2008, the 1 Series Coupe will be available in two versions; the 128i and the 135i. Powered by a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline 6-cyinder engine that generates 200 lb-ft of torque (very credible). The 135i Coupe features BMW's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and an incredible 300 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm (yikes!).

It was only a matter of time before tuners got a hold of it. The Breyton Team has taken the 1-Series and turned it into something to be reckon'd with. Bigger wheels, aggressive stylish body kit and a boost in horsepower and torque are all part of the package. Breyton offers 9.0 x 20? and 225/30 wheels. Niccccceeeeeee!

If BMW's Mini is already a standout in the compact segment, with the forthcoming 1-Series what will the Japanese automakers do against a formidable one-two punch. But let's be real, all we care about is if there will be an M Powered version. And yes, there will. The BMW M1 gets the old BMW M3 6-cylinders with 343 HP. With 343 HP, the famous 3.2 Liter 6-cylinders engine from the BMW M3, adjusted in the meantime, the future BMW M1 could accelerate in 5.2 seconds from 0-60. Really, really, niccceeeeee!

Top Gear Presents: CLK GTR

Enjoy the Top Gear footage. It's a monster.

Lotus 2 Eleven

The ultimate street legal light weight track car. 250hp (like a Boxter) uh at half the weight. At only 1.8 liters compliments of Toyota with a supercharger. 0-60 in 3.8 seconds! 0-100 in just under 9 seconds. But wear a helmet unless you want road kill in your teeth because there's really no windshield.

AC Schnitzer is Child's Play: Meet the LUMMA 5 Series

It started out as just a Photoshop illustration, then someone had to go an build the darn thing. Meet the Lumma CLR 500 RS or M5 on steroids. The pumped-up bodykit widens the body 5cm each side front and back, with the arch extensions blending into a new front bumper and rear apron with integrated diffuser that has been fashioned around the custom exhaust pipes.

Keen BMW fans will have also spotted that every chrome part of the M5 has been ditched and replaced with carbon fibre. As has the rear deck, which now features a subtle rear spoiler lip. The three-piece wheels are a substantial 10x21 at the front and 11.5x21 at the back (simply madness!!!). We'll see if we can get more details soon.

Yamaha R1 Vs Bugatti Veyron

In case you had any doubts on the Veyron's speed, you better guess again. Then what happens when a Carrera GT joins in. And yes, both cars "pull" out on the R1.

Speed TV Honda Cup: S2000 Feature

Unquestionable a personal favorite of mine. However, if you want to get out of that daily rut of driving this pocket rocket up and down the highway and separate the men from the boys then take it to the track.

The Evolution of the M3

Long hailed as the top performance car, pound for pound, and yes dollar for dollar, the M3 fights back the only way Bavarian would to let all would be bystanders know who the reigning champ has been and will be. So here are the specs...compliments of MSN Autos:

For the first time in its 15-year history the M3 will get V8 power. Under the bulging hood will lurk a 4.0-liter V8 engine producing 420 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, teamed with a 6-speed manual transmission rather than the controversial sequential manual gearbox (SMG). BMW claims 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds with a governed top speed of 155 mph. The bold fender flares, air intakes, side sills and discreet rear spoiler will help differentiate the M3 from the standard 3-Series. The M3 will also be the first in the segment with a carbon fiber reinforced roof for greater rigidity and a lower center of gravity.

Basically it looks very much like a cross between the new 3 with the stance of the 6 series. Now let's take it for a test drive!

The Civic Type-R R (that's 2 R's)

260 bhp, 2.0 liter i-VTEC. So what if your GTI is pretuned! This is factor tuned madness (at least for a Civic) at it's best. Built by JAS Motorsport, this is Civic off all factory tuned Civics. However, the price in British pounds is 65,000. Translated, that's over $100k US.

Stroked 350z to 760HP

Talk about p#%^*& off a 911 Porche owner (996, 997, 999 whatever). Let's go race, FOR PINK SLIPS BABY! So about the build, it's a 4.24L (not your typicall US spec 3.5L). The owner, Alex Yao, calls her Alyssa. Her favorite cocktail, 100 Octane gas. That would be 713 ft-lb torque at a mere 18psi of boost to go with that 760HP number. Cheston Chiu, who can fill you in on the rest of the details on Jtuned.com, noted that Alyssa is carrying twins; both named Garrett. Yes, twin turbo only as it's supposed to be.

Fine Tuned - by SpeedTV

So I'm religiously a SpeedTV addict. Some of you watch the soaps, some of you watch Cable sports packages to catch every game. For me, it's TIVO and every race and custom car show (minus Nascar - it's taking me a while but I'm coming around). So, enter Fine Tuned...a continuation from Tuner Transformation. Tyson hosts, average everyday whips enter, and get JDM'd, Nismo'd, TRD'd, you get the picture. First up was my personal favorite, the invincible 350z, uh, yeah, dubbed Tuner car of the year for 2006. Here's the before shot of the lucky owner's vehicle.

Here are the list of mods:

Vortech Super Charger
Brembo Big Brake Upgrade
B&M Shifter
Vortech Engine FMU
Fidanza Clutch and Flywheel
Seibon Carbon Hood
APR Drag Wing
Tein Coilovers w/ EDFC
Cobra Seats
House of Kolor Rasberry Pearl
Volk CEN 28N
Toyo Tires
Rockford Fosgate audio
Auto Meter Gauges
Nitrous Express NX Intercooler
Simpson

Not bad...

Here's what they created.

Nice work from the folks at Speed. Uh, I got next!

A,B,C...Another Bad Creation - Carbon that is...

Turbo Mag featured a 1996 Acura NSX that is about as "carbonated" as it gets. That would be carbon fiber trimmings. Now a bit of education from the boys at Turbo, this car represents "dry carbon." Their explanation...."Because the demand for carbon fiber is very strong, cheaper alternatives have been developed, like the so-called "wet carbon." This has absolutely nothing to do with the true "dry-carbon" that is described in the article, as the resulting parts have next to no structural rigidity or any of the qualities usually associated with carbon-fiber parts. Wet carbon is simply made by layering one or two skins of fiber on top of a resin or FRP structure to create the carbon look. After drying, it's then glossed up by either polishing or putting on a few clear coats. Okay, so you get the picture here. The owner, Uchida-san, wanted to create a monster and well he did.

Ofcourse, It's a 300hp Ford Focus Stupid

It's no secret we get the short end of many great tuner creations across the pond, especially those that would create a new found respect for cars otherwise, not worthy. Meet the AWD (that's not a typo) 300hp Focus, dubbed the Focus RS. Stateside, the best we go was the now defunct or put on hold SVT. This is another story. I'll let the Brits at Maxpower magazine show you the rest through their spy photos.
